Abstract:

Over the last few years, biology has experienced the development and application of microarray technology. Monitoring the expression and interaction of thousands of genes has given rise to many problems that require adequate statistical tests. Most methods for the analysis of microarray data can be found in R packages from Bioconductor, which is an "open source and open development software project for the analysis and comprehension of genomic data". Although Bioconductor has software packages to analyse all types of genomic data, this tutorial will be focused on the analysis of single channel Affymetrix and two channel cDNA microarrays.

This tutorial aims to introduce a few number of Bioconductor software packages for microarray data. Participants will be presented some libraries for: (1) preprocessing of data including statistical tools for between array and within array normalization, (2) statistical inference procedures to identify differentially expressed genes under two different conditions . How to apply these Bioconductor project modules and how to interpret the results meaningfully will be a major issue of this tutorial. All aspects of the tutorial are aimed at those who are familiarized with microarray data and basic statistical knowledge.
